We’re back with our origami flower series craft! For today’s origami craft project we chose something fun and easy. Learn how to make origami tulips in a few minutes, with the help of our step-by-step tutorial.
Origami tulips are one of the most popular origami flowers and one of the least complicated advanced origami flower folding crafts. Even if you’re a beginner at origami folding, you can learn how to make these advanced origami tulips with the help of our step-by-step tutorial.
Even though, the crafting takes some time but trust me the end result is worth the time and effort. You can use these origami tulips to make a paper flower bouquet or decorate a gift box or use them as photography props. You can also use them to make brooches for guests (in a special event) and so much more.
We used a 15 cm x 15 cm piece of colored craft paper to make the tulip flower pattern and used 2 pieces of 6 cm x 12 cm green colored craft paper to make the leaf and stem. Besides craft papers, this project requires craft glue, a craft stick, and a pair of scissors, which we can assume you already have at home since these are basic craft supplies. As for the cost, even a couple of origami tulips won’t cost more than a dollar.
How to Make Origami Tulips with Stem

Grab all the supplies and let’s learn how to make origami tulips.
Origami Tulip Folding Instructions
Step 1: Base Folding
Prepare a square paper (we’re using a 15 cm x 15 cm sheet) from a colored craft paper of your choice. Make vertical and horizontal half creases and then make half-diagonal creases.
The center of the square is where all the half creases intersect. Hole any one of the corners (of the square paper) and bring it to the center of the square.
Step 2: 2nd Base Folding
One by one, bring all 4 corners to the center of the square paper.
Now, fold the current square pattern into half, diagonally and keep the folded parts inside.
Step 3: Forming the Diamond Shape
Keep the current triangle pattern closed along the middle crease and then open either side (we opened the right side).
Open the right side all the way and then flatten it with the current pattern.
Step 4: Side Folding
Similarly, open and flatten the other side of the current pattern.
Keeping the open sides facing upwards, fold the open sides (corners) of the top flap inside, slightly away from the middle crease.
Step 5: Side Folding and Flipping
Turn the pattern to the other side and similarly, fold the sides of the open sides of the flap.
Now, flip and exchange the folded flaps. This will position the folded parts inside.
Step 6: Folding Bottom Ends
This is a tricky part. Make thin folds along the bottom, closed side of the current pattern.
Once you’ve folded the bottom sides of one side, then turn and do the same for the other side.
Step 7: Cutting the Bottom End
Use a pair of scissors to cut a small part from the bottom-closed end of the pattern.
Now, we will slowly widen the open end of the pattern.
Step 8: Tulip Pattern Opening and Preparing Green Paper
Open the tulip flower pattern carefully and neatly. Keep it aside while we prepare the leaf and the stem.
Prepare 2 pieces of green-colored craft paper (12 cm x 6 cm) for the leaf and stem patterns.
Step 9: Crafting the Stem
Take any one of the green papers and let’s craft the stem first. Use a neatly round-shaped stick (we’re using a craft stick) to make the stem. Start to coil the green paper around the stick. Instead of coiling the paper straight around the stick, keep it slightly diagonal, this will give the paper stem pattern a nice and sturdy structure.
Coil the whole paper and apply glue at the open end to secure the coiled paper stem pattern.
Step 10: Attaching Tulip to the Stem
Use scissors to cut 1 cm deep slits on either end of the paper stem into 4 even parts. Use your fingertips to spread out the slits and then apply glue on the outer sides of the slits.
Insert the bottom end of the stem through the bottom hole of the origami tulip pattern. Insert the stem from the inside of the tulip pattern. Press the glued parts of the stem against the bottom (inside) part of the tulip t secure the stem pattern with the origami tulip pattern.
Step 11: Leaf Base Folding
Allow the glue to dry, so that the stem and the origami tulip are fixed together nicely. Curl the outer ends of the origami tulips’ petals. Curl them outwards.
Now, take the other green paper and create a half-crease along the middle (longer side).
Step 12: 1st and 2nd Corner Folding
Fold in 2 corners of any one side.
Now, fold the diagonal sides inside and align them with the middle crease.
Step 13: 3rd Corner and Bottom Folding
Fold the current diagonal sides inside, along the middle crease one more time.
Now, fold both sides of the middle crease in half, on the bottom side of the current pattern. The straight side of this pattern is the bottom side of the leaf and the pointy end is the top end of the leaf.
Step 14: Attaching the Leaf to the Stem
Apply glue to the bottom side of the origami leaf pattern.
Wrap the bottom side (glued part) of the origami leaf around the stem, below the origami tulip. Hold the leaf wrapped around the stem for a few seconds so that it is fixed nicely to the stem.

Folding Origami Tulips: Tips for Beginners
Here are some tips if you’re having difficulty crafting the origami lily.
- Use a piece of square paper for the tulip pattern and 1:2 ratio paper for the stem and leaf patterns.
- Like we always say, make sure that the vertical, horizontal, and diagonal base folds are neatly done.
- Be careful not to cut the bottom hole too big; otherwise, it would be difficult to attach the stem to the flower.
- We always suggest using white glue or craft glue for any origami crafts, it’s easier to handle.
